I'll also start the PhD program this October, though I don't really care for it.
But they've promissed that it would be connected strongly to my current project
and that I won't have to attend the majority of the classes. So I gave in to that.
But I still am thinking about dropping the whole thing.

Yep, Java's a rather nice thing.

I graduated high school there. And for me the main thing was to see the way of living of people there, which I did see allright, and didn't really like what I saw.

Good for you :) well, and for Mech Math as well.

I wouldn't worry about that too much. English will come naturally to you.
Take your time to learn another language, it will bring diversity into your vocabulary, since
while learning some language you're bound to find out lots of things about the language you already know.
Right now I am trying to bring my spanish to perfection, and at the same time am learning (in a rather relaxed way) two other languages, catalan and italian. Within two years I plan to master them two and stop the language "crusade".
So tell me, after you're daone with your PhD, what are you gonna do?
