PhD RESEARCH OPENINGS IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS (USA)
The Geomechanics Group at the University of Minnesota is seeking talented doctoral students in the area of mathematical modeling applied to solid and fluid mechanics. Possible research areas include, but are not limited to, wave propagation and scattering, mechanics of heterogeneous and multi-phase materials, fracture mechanics, plasticity, nonlinear dynamics, and inverse problems. On average, the Geomechanics Group admits 5 new doctoral students every year; the preferred application period is between January and April.
GEOMECHANICS PROGRAM
The graduate program in Geomechanics at the University of Minnesota focuses on the applications of scientific principles and engineering techniques to the study of rock, soil, subsurface fluids, and biological materials. The program has seven full-time faculty and one adjunct faculty member in geomechanics engineering, with several faculty in related fields. Graduate enrollment in the group includes approximately twenty five students. Majority of the full-time students is in the Ph.D. program. The Geomechanics group has a close collaboration with institutions such as Ecole Polytechnique, France and CSRO, Australia which provide doctoral students with an opportunity for international travel and research experience. For more details, see the Geomechanics Brochure at www.ce.umn.edu/graduate/geome and www.ce.umn.edu/~guzina/ as research examples.
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
Founded in 1851, the University of Minnesota is one of the most comprehensive public universities in the United States and ranks among the most prestigious. It is both the state land-grant university, and the state's primary research university, with faculty of national and international reputation. The University's annual budget is over $2.2 billion; its 2004 sponsored research awards totaled over $500 million. The University's main campus is centrally located in the Minneapolis - St Paul metropolitan area with over 2.5 million people. www1.umn.edu/twincities/index.php
PAST EXPERIENCE
Over the past ten yeas, the Geomechanics Group at the University of Minnesota has had 7 doctoral students from Russia (4 graduated, 3 in progress) with an undergraduate or Master's degree in mathematics (Novosibirsk University, Moscow State University, St. Petersburg Technical University, and Gubkin Oil & Gas Institute) . Those who graduated have secured regarded research positions in major multi-national companies (Shell, Schlumberger), U.S. Government institutions (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), and academia (Clarkson University).
