The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies was founded at Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1988. As compared with other departments of the University, it is still very young. However, the notable creative achievements of its professors and instructors, the high level of students' and postgraduates' grounding allow to say with confidence that the Faculty of Foreign Languages has been a success and is a worthy member in the large family of the faculties of Moscow State University.

Convincing evidence of the Faculty's successful work are, in particular, its broad international contacts and the recognition of its achievements in the university community of the world.

Russian history has assigned a special role to Moscow University, and great is its responsibility to society. A high level of professionalism, deep knowledge and readiness to serve society are expected from its alumni.

The alumni of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies of Lomonosov Moscow State University meet these high criteria. 1. 45.03.02 Linguistics

Specializations:

• Ñross-cultural Communication

  The core curriculum for the Bachelor's programme at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies is implemented in accordance with the Educational standard set independently by Lomonosov Moscow State University for the current higher education programmes in Linguistics. Bachelor's degree graduates work primarily in the field of research, business, project and organisational management. Each graduate is expected to possess fundamental theoretical knowledge and sufficient practical skills and consequently demonstrate the general professional competences in linguistics. Students who have successfully completed the degree are able to apply their knowledge and skills in the field of linguistics, comparative study of languages and cultures and cross-cultural communication. They are proficient in both first and second foreign languages, able to use communicative strategies and rhetorical techniques for effective written and oral communication. Each graduate is supposed to have a thorough understanding of core and elective courses including the courses designed for every specialisation of the programme. All the graduates undertake placements in relevant organisations to further develop their professional skills.

• Theory and Methodology of Foreign Language Teaching

2. 51.03.01 Cultural Studies

The core curriculum for the Bachelor's programme in Cultural Studies is implemented at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies in accordance with the Educational standard set by Lomonosov Moscow State University for the Bachelor's programme in Cultural Studies. The programme offers students the opportunity to study a broad selection of general liberal arts courses (Philosophy, History, Legal studies, Economics, Ancient languages, History of science, and Modern natural science), general professional courses (Theory and History of culture, Art theory and Art history, Theory and history of literature, History of religion, Semiotics, Applied cultural studies, Library science, Museology and Archiving, Cultural management, and Folk art), specialised courses (Culture source studies, Comparative mythology, Traditional Russian culture, Introduction to Slavonic studies, Comparative literature, Comprehension and interpretation of foreign texts, Fundamentals of public speaking in a foreign language, Modern culture, and two Foreign languages) as well as elective courses and seminars. Undergraduates undertake various placements (ethnographic and museum-related) in relevant organisations. Thus graduates are well equipped with their professional competences as well as proficient in two foreign languages and get their Bachelor's degree in Theoretical, Historical and Applied Cultural Studies.

The Bachelor's programme in Cultural Studies allows its graduates to obtain qualifications and sufficient knowledge to work in such fields as organisational management for government, public and commercial organisations including those promoting cultural exchange between countries; development of academic and research programmes aimed at preserving and exploring cultural heritage, including the ones at international level; project work, analysis and consulting for non-governmental and governmental organisations, cultural establishments, companies and consulting groups; development and production in Mass Media, publishing houses, advertising and information agencies, tourism, marketing and other companies; running public awareness campaigns in cultural establishments (museums, libraries, cultural and educational centers, galleries); teaching various aspects of culture, literature and language at schools and universities.

3. 41.03.01 International Area Studies

Specializations:

• American Studies

  The Bachelor's programme in International Area Studies aims to provide students with a solid foundation and training in the field of area studies and sustainable region development. The programme is comprised of a group of courses which cover current issues in area studies such as the economy of the region studied, its legal system, social thought, language and culture, regional units and political development. Graduates are expected to have developed an interdisciplinary approach to urgent issues in area studies. The students who have successfully completed the programme should demonstrate competences in carrying out expert assessment and giving recommendations regarding regional and external policy, scientific, educational, information and cultural exchange, as well as ensuring effective bilateral and multilateral communication. Particular attention is paid to the study of two foreign languages. The gained knowledge of communicative strategies and principles, rhetorical, stylistic and language norms and devices accepted in different areas of communication allows graduates to complete professional tasks successfully.The Bachelor of Arts degree programme in American Studies provides a solid foundation in the study of the following countries and regions: the USA, Canada, countries and regions of Latin America. The programme includes such courses as Everyday life theory, Russia and the USA in terms of mutual perception, American literature, North American and Canadian area studies, Russian-American relations: cultural and historical aspects, etc. Students gain the necessary skills for conducting functional and structural analysis of political, social and economic institutions typical of American countries and regions based on their knowledge of the countries' cultural and historical features.

• European Studies

  The Bachelor's programme in International Area Studies aims to provide students with a solid foundation and training in the field of area studies and sustainable region development. The programme is comprised of a group of courses which cover current issues in area studies such as the economy of the region studied, its legal system, social thought, language and culture, regional units and political development. Graduates are expected to have developed an interdisciplinary approach to urgent issues in area studies. The students who have successfully completed the programme should demonstrate competences in carrying out expert assessment and giving recommendations regarding regional and external policy, scientific, educational, information and cultural exchange, as well as ensuring effective bilateral and multilateral communication. Particular attention is paid to the study of two foreign languages. The gained knowledge of communicative strategies and principles, rhetorical, stylistic and language norms and devices accepted in different areas of communication allows graduates to complete professional tasks successfully.The Bachelor of Arts degree programme in European Studies provides a comprehensive study of the following countries: Great Britain, Italy, France, and Germany. The programme is comprised of a set of modules which equip students with an extensive knowledge of European political and social institutions, territorial stability issues, patterns of regional integration, European fine arts, etc. Students obtain a solid foundation in conducting structural and functional analysis of political, social and economic institutions of European countries and regions based on their knowledge of the countries' cultural and historical features.

4. 41.03.02 Russian Studies

The ?Bachelor of Arts? degree programme in International Studies offers a solid foundation and advanced training in the field of area studies and sustainable development of Russia as a region. The programme comprises a set of modules which cover a variety of issues in area studies, including current issues in the field, the economy of the region in question, its legal system, social thought, the language and culture of a region, regional units, political development, etc. The emphasis is placed on developing an interdisciplinary approach to urgent issues in area studies. Students gain the necessary skills in analyzing and giving recommendations regarding regional and external policy, scientific, educational, information and cultural interchange, and ensuring multilateral communication.

  Graduates of the "Master of Linguistics" programme gain a thorough preparation for careers in science, education, translation and interpretation, management and intercultural communication. The programme provides a solid theoretical foundation in linguistic theory and the skills necessary for succeeding in respective areas. The core courses include studies in linguistic theory, verbal communication theory, information and communication technology for linguistics, courses in two foreign languages, as well as other courses tailored to the programme's needs. As a supplement to their coursework, to obtain relevant professional experience in their field of study all the students have undergone training in field-specific companies and organizations.
  The specialisation offers a number of courses that combine theory of communication, linguistics and practice of public relations aimed at creation, support and protection of corporate image.

• Theory of Foreign Language Teaching and Intercultural Communication

  Graduates of the "Master of Linguistics" programme gain a thorough preparation for careers in science, education, translation and interpretation, management and intercultural communication. The programme provides a solid theoretical foundation in linguistic theory and the skills necessary for succeeding in respective areas. The core courses include studies in linguistic theory, verbal communication theory, information and communication technology for linguistics, courses in two foreign languages, as well as other courses tailored to the programme's needs. As a supplement to their coursework, to obtain relevant professional experience in their field of study all the students have undergone training in field-specific companies and organizations.
  The specialisation offers advanced study of academic basis of foreign language teaching and provides acquisition of principles and methods of teaching students of various ages, development of intercultural competence.

• Contrastive Cultural Studies and Intercultural Communication

  Graduates of the "Master of Linguistics" programme gain a thorough preparation for careers in science, education, translation and interpretation, management and intercultural communication. The programme provides a solid theoretical foundation in linguistic theory and the skills necessary for succeeding in respective areas. The core courses include studies in linguistic theory, verbal communication theory, information and communication technology for linguistics, courses in two foreign languages, as well as other courses tailored to the programme's needs. As a supplement to their coursework, to obtain relevant professional experience in their field of study all the students have undergone training in field-specific companies and organizations.
  The specialisation combines philological and cultural disciplines. This ensures training multi-skilled specialists who are able to apply their knowledge in academia and intercultural communication.

• Theory of Translation and Intercultural Communication

  Graduates of the "Master of Linguistics" programme gain a thorough preparation for careers in science, education, translation and interpretation, management and intercultural communication.   The specialisation provides theoretical basis and development of practical skills of translation and interpreting from and to European languages.

• Russian Language Studies

  Graduates of the "Master of Linguistics" programme gain a thorough preparation for careers in science, education, translation and interpretation, management and intercultural communication. The programme provides a solid theoretical foundation in linguistic theory and the skills necessary for succeeding in respective areas. The core courses include studies in linguistic theory, verbal communication theory, information and communication technology for linguistics, courses in two foreign languages, as well as other courses tailored to the programme's needs. As a supplement to their coursework, to obtain relevant professional experience in their field of study all the students have undergone training in field-specific companies and organizations.
  The programme provides a broad view of the Russian language and its functioning in speech processes. It also covers the relationship between the language and Russian history and culture, as well as its place among other world languages.

2. 41.04.02 Russian Studies

Specialization Russia and the World: Cross-cultural Studies

The Master of Arts programme in Russian Studies aims to develop the necessary skills and expertise in the field of comprehensive area studies and sustainable region development. The programme builds on a set of specialized discipline modules which cover a broad spectrum of topics: issues in regional studies, the economy and the legal system of a chosen target region, the social thought, language and culture issues, ethno psychology, the political development within the region. Special emphasis is made on promoting an interdisciplinary approach to current problem areas in regional studies, devising relevant expert judgments and suggestions for state institutions with regard to their regional and external policy making, their involvement with scientific, educational, information and cultural exchanges, trade and economic relations, as well as multilateral communication. Particular attention is given to teaching students two foreign languages as part of the programme. Students' grounding in appropriate communicative strategies, rhetoric and stylistic means used in a variety of communicative contexts and other skills provides them with a solid preparation for handling their future professional tasks.
