Mikhail Petrovich KIRPICHNIKOV - Pro-Rector

Doctor of Biology (1987), Full member of the Russian Academy of Science (1997), Professor, Head of the Biological Engineering Department at the Faculty of Biology (2000), Head of the Protein Engineering Laboratory of the Bioorganic Chemistry Institute of the Russian Academy of Science (2002), Pro-Rector - Head of the Innovation Policy and Innovation Project Management Department (2004).
Graduated in Molecular Biophysics from Moscow Institute for Physics and Techniques (1969). In 1972 he completed his post-graduate studies at the same Institute. For more than 25 years he had been working at the Molecular Biology Institute of the Academy of Science of USSR, then at the Bioorganic Chemistry Institute of the Russian Academy of Science.
Since 1989 he has been combining his academic work with the work as a Head of the Science and High School Ministry, Head of the Science, Education and High Technologies Department of the Russian Federation Government, Science and Technology Minister, Deputy Minister of Industry, Science and Technology.
Academician Mikhail P. Kirpichnikov is one of the disciples of A.A. Baev, one of the founders of Russian Molecular Biology and Gene Engineering. He is also one of the leading specialists in the field of Physical and Chemical Biology, Protein Engineering and Biotechnology. He is the author of more than 250 publications and possesses a number of author?s certificates for his inventions. He was one of the first to suggest and to apply the new approach in the studies of the protein structure and DNA, basing on the complex application of the Gene Engineering methods, chemical synthesis of olinucleotides and physical analysis of the structure of biopolymers.
He attained outstanding results in the construction and studies of artificial proteins. A group of scientists under his supervision designed and created the first protein with a defined function and structure, de novo. After this work Mikhail P. Kirpichnikov was awarded the Russian Federation State Prize for Science and Technology.
The works by Mikhail P. Kirpichnikov are recognized all over the world. The basic issues of his theories are quoted in monographs and textbooks. For several years M. Kirpichnikov has been delivering a course of lectures "Protein Bioengineering". He is considered the founder of the Russian school of Protein Engineering.
Academician Mikhail P. Kirpichnikov is a member of the Russian Academy of Science Praesidium, member of the Higher Attestation Commission, member of the Russian Fund for Fundamental Research Council, member of the Russian State Fund for Science Council, member of the Coordination Council of the Life Sciences and Biotechnology Specialization, and other Councils of the Russian Academy of Science and the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, member of the editorial boards of a number of scientific journals, member of the Specialized Doctoral Council of the Russian Academy of Science Gene Biology Institute.
The academic and administrative activity of Mikhail P. Kirpichnikov is appreciated in Russia and abroad. He is a recipient of the Order of Honour, a number of medals.
Mikhail P. Kirpichnikov is married, with a daughter. His wife is the Head of the Shubnikov Laboratory of the Christallography Institute of the Russian Academy of Science. His Daughter is the MSU Faculty of Biology graduate.
