CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT CALL FOR PAPERS

Fulbright Academy Science Conference
Park Inn Hotel, Berlin, Germany, March 4-5, 2006 Organized by: The Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology Co-sponsored by: The German-American Fulbright Commission
With financial and organizational support from:
German Fulbright Alumni Association, The Monsanto Fund, The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and others

Conference Announcement: Fulbright scholar grantees and Fulbright alumni from Europe and beyond are invited to the Academy's Science Conference, to be held in Berlin, Germany on Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5, 2006. Others who have an interest in the Fulbright program are also welcome to attend, including hosts of current and past grantees. The conference language is English. Who Will Attend? This will be the Fulbright Academy's first conference, and we expect some 150 people, including natural and social scientists, government officials, corporate executives, students, and retirees. One-third of the attendees will be Americans who are current Fulbright grantees in Europe. Most of the other attendees will be based in Europe, but we also expect guests from Africa, Asia, North America and elsewhere. See website for a list of pre-registered attendees and special guests. Established in 2003, the Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology (FAST) is a non-profit organization for alumni of the Fulbright Exchange Program and others interested in science and technology innovation. FAST is an independently funded, membership organization and is not affiliated with the US State Department or any of the agencies or commissions involved in administering Fulbright exchanges. This Conference will create new international ties among alumni, current grantees, Fulbright hosts, and others interested in international exchange. The program is designed for people in the natural and social sciences, engineering, technology, and medicine, and for those whose personal or business interests relate to those fields. FAST has supporters in countries from around the world. Among its various activities, FAST organizes events and networking programs where members and supporters can meet, exchange research results and innovative ideas, and develop new friendships in the spirit of the Fulbright Exchange Program. This Conference will be held in Berlin because the German-US exchange program is the largest of the Fulbright exchanges, with over 600 grantees participating each year. Our conference will be held immediately before the 52nd Fulbright Seminar, a program organized each year by the German-American Fulbright Commission. FAST Conference attendees will participate in the opening reception of this seminar, which brings hundreds of current grantees to Berlin for four days of tours, programs, and fun. The Conference is being organized by FAST and is co-sponsored by the German-American Fulbright Commission, with additional financial and organizational support from other partners and sponsors. If you or your organization would like to be a sponsor of this or other FAST programs, please contact us at +1.207.799.3098. Confirmed sponsors will be listed on the conference announcements, programs and in the Annals of the Fulbright Academy.

CALL FOR PAPERS & POSTERS
You are invited to submit an abstract for a paper or poster that focuses on a current topic in science & technology. Your emphasis should include the linkage between your innovative work and how Fulbrighters are able to apply the knowledge gained as a result of their international experiences. The conference is not limited to Fulbright grantees and alumni; any individual may submit a proposal. Abstracts will be evaluated based on relevance to tracks, originality, quality, and clarity. The conference language is English. Interpretation will not be provided. Presentations will be on both days and each will be 20-30 minutes long, including discussion. The poster session is on Sunday. Current Fulbright grantees coming to Berlin for the 52nd Annual Seminar will be asked to present a poster or display on their science-related work. Posters and displays from alumni and others are welcome, provided there is a strong link between the research presented and the individual's Fulbright experience. Proposed tracks and hot-topic discussions are below, but additional topics will be considered. The tracks may be changed based on the abstracts submitted. · The UN Millennium Development Goals · Climate change & international environmental policy · Science education / science literacy · Economics / IT / computers · Geography / Sociology · Engineering / energy / renewable energy · Innovation / application of new ideas / tech transfer All abstracts should be 300-350 words long and in English. The abstract should include the lead author's name, affiliation, location, and relationship with the Fulbright program. You will be notified in October if your abstract is selected. If selected, you will be expected to register and present your paper at the conference in March.

BERLIN, GERMANY
For more than a decade, Berlin has been the capitol of reunited Germany. The conference hotel is on Alexanderplatz, in the heart of Berlin. It is within easy walking distance of many of Berlin's famous museums, the Berliner Dom, City Hall (below), and other government buildings. Berlin is home to 3.4 million people. Because of its central location in Europe, numerous international corporations have offices in Berlin. As the seat of the German Federal Government, Berlin is also at the political crossroads of German national, regional and local politics. Berlin's natural and cultural diversity are amazing, including over 150 theatres and playhouses, more than 170 museums and collections and innumerable parks and natural areas. Environmental policies and urban/regional planning have been based on principles of sustainability: reducing the use of energy, water and soil and maintaining a functional and social mix in the city. During your time in Berlin, you will be introduced to some of this diversity. The conference fee includes sciencerelated tours on Saturday morning and on Sunday afternoon. These are special tours, organized for us by local Fulbrighters and experts. Several tour topics have been suggested: engineering marvels, preservation of cultural artifacts, medical research, geography/regional planning, and energy research. If there is a tour theme that particularly interests you, please contact us before the end of December, and we will try to organize it. Send a message to: conf@FulbrightAcademy.org

Presentations at the 2005 Seminar

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR 2005-06 FULBRIGHT GRANTEES:
· 2005-06 American Fulbright grantees in Germany will be invited to Berlin for the Commission's 52nd Annual Seminar, and their expenses are covered by the German Commission. This includes travel from their host city to Berlin and back, as well as the hotel in Berlin but not the expenses for the science program. 2005-06 Fulbright grantees to other countries are welcome to stay in Berlin for the 52nd Annual Seminar. Some national commissions provide funding to current grantees to attend this annual event. Grantees should contact their respective commission to see if funding is available to cover their travel and hotel expenses. All current grantees are invited to arrive in Berlin a day early and participate in this Science Conference. Part of your registration fee has been paid for by the sponsors, but you will need to pay a small registration fee to cover the extra night in the hotel. Many Fulbright grantees are proud of their research and their work. As a way for you to share your experience with other grantees, you will be asked to prepare a display about your work. Depending on your field of work, it could be a poster with pictures and text, a powerpoint presentation on your laptop, or a table-top display with some of your research materials. The "Poster Session" will take place during the reception on Sunday afternoon and will be open to FAST Conference participants, 52nd Fulbright Seminar participants and the public.

BACKGROUND ON THE SEMINARS
The German-American Fulbright Commission manages the largest Fulbright exchange program. Since the exchanges began in the 1940s, over 40,000 people have participated 25,000 Germans and 16,000 Americans. Starting in the 1950s, when West Berlin was an island surrounded by communist East Germany, all American grantees were invited to Berlin for a several-day seminar.

·

·

Fulbrighters on a tour. The goal of the seminar is to expose grantees in depth to the current German political and cultural situation and to strengthen transatlantic ties. Relevant themes are addressed during a series of academic and cultural events put together by the Fulbright Commission in Berlin, with the help of many local Fulbright grantees and alumni.

·

Nearly three hundred Fulbright grantees attended the 51

st

Annual Seminar in March 2005. The students, professors, teachers, teaching assistants, and journalists were accompanied by spouses, children, and invited guests as well as over 60 American Fulbrighters from 14 other EU countries plus Norway, Bulgaria, and Turkey. The FAST Conference is a partnership between FAST and the Commission. In organizing this conference, our goal is to enhance the 2006 Seminar, while also providing an opportunity for alumni from around the world to share their knowledge, to learn, and to meet some of the current grantees.
