Information Systems and WEB-portals on Biodiversity of Species & Ecosystems
(BOROK -IT)

Information letter ? 2

(Borok, Yaroslavl province, Russia)

Dear colleagues!

We invite you to take part in the International Symposium 'Information Systems and WEB-portals on Biodiversity of Species & Ecosystems' which will be held in Borok, Yaroslavl province, Russia, November 28th to 1st December, 2006. The previous Symposium was held in the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Science (1-4 December 2003). It attracted attention of a large number of specialists both from Russia and foreign countries. Nearly 200 scientists participated in the previous Symposium. In recent years, especially after the publication of the materials of the previous Symposium (2003), many requests for "IT -2006" organization have been received. More detailed information about the Symposium held in 2003 is presented at the URL address: http://www.zin.ru/conferences/isbse/index.html

The next symposium is suggested to include the discussion of theoretical and practical issues, connected with the most actual problem of automation of scientific studies in the field of biodiversity.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

Topic areas include:

  1. Collection & Taxonomic Databases; Electronic Catalogues of taxonomic names
  2. Virtual collections of species images and Interactive keys
  3. Information Systems for monitoring of Natural Ecosystems using ground truth and remote sensing data
  4. Web-portals on Biodiversity in the Internet and Information Systems on CD, DVD and etc.
  5. Information Systems on Economic Important Species: resource and rare species, species harmful for environment and agriculture (quarantine species and invasive species).
  6. Specialized software for the biodiversity research at population, species and community levels.
  7. Problem-oriented automatic program complexes for the assessment of genetic and genome diversity at population and species levels.

Electronic distribution maps of Ukrainian fungi and plants

The objective of this project, funded by the UK Royal Society, is to make a CD ROM of electronic distribution maps of Ukrainian fungi and plants. The source of information is an enlarged and enhanced version of the database used for "Fungi of Ukraine" (a preliminary national checklist produced through an earlier project funded by the UK Darwin Initiative). That database currently contains over 84000 observations in Ukraine of living organisms, mostly fungi. In almost all of these observations the oblast (country) of origin is identifiable, and for the half of then has been possible to allocate latitude and longitude co-ordinates of sufficient accuracy for mapping. Maps have been prepared using national and oblast boundary data derived from Ukraine, with GIS software provided by the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology. When complete, these maps will show the distribution (as currently known to the database) for over 5000 species of fungi, and their over 1700 species of associated with them plants. By highlighting the species and areas studied insufficiently, the work is a major step towards a rational conservation strategy for Ukrainian fungi.- 1 CABI Bioscience, Bakeham Lane, Egham, Surrey, TW20 9TY, UK, E-mail d.minter@cabi.org; 2 M.G.
