Theoretical gravitational physics
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University
invites applications for a faculty position in physics starting in
the fall of 2012. The faculty in the gravity theory group at LSU
consists of Peter Diener, Robert O'Connell, Jorge Pullin, Parampreet
Singh and Gabrielle Allen and Edward Seidel (both on leave at the
National Science Foundation). There is also a quantum information
technology group at LSU led by Jonathan Dowling, a theoretical
astrophysics group led by Juhan Frank and Joel Tohline, and an
experimental gravity group led by Thomas Corbitt, Joe Giaime,
Gabriela Gonzalez and Warren Johnson. The Department has strong
research efforts in particle physics, including nuclear and neutrino
physics, space physics, condensed matter physics, medical physics,
and astronomy and astrophysics.
Preference will be given to candidates working in loop quantum gravity,
but exceptional candidates in other areas of theoretical gravity
will also be considered.
Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
An offer of employment is contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment
background check. Application deadline is December 15th 2011 or until
a candidate is selected.

The Computer Science Department at the University of Kaiserslautern offers a
PhD position
within the research project
Parallel Algorithms for Multiscale Simulations (PAMS).
The candidate will work on the development and theoretical assessment of
parallel algorithms for finite element simulations. We are looking for students
with experience in both theory and practice of parallel programming (message

GRAPPA Postdoctoral Fellowship
The GRAPPA (Gravitation AstroParticle Physics Amsterdam) Institute is a new initiative within the Science Faculty of the University of Amsterdam. Launched in October 2011, GRAPPA is a collaboration between the institutes for Theoretical Physics, Astronomy and High Energy Physics (http://uvaapp.nl/). Five new faculty have just been hired: Shin'ichiro Ando, Gianfranco Bertone, Patrick Decowski, Ben Freivogel and Jacco Vink, whose research interests include dark matter, dark energy, neutrinos, and cosmic rays, with a focus on both theoretical modeling of astrophysical source physics as well as (in)direct detection. In addition, there are about 15 affiliated GRAPPA faculty from the collaborating institutes, who are involved in experimental work at Antares/KM3NeT, ATLAS, XENON1T/XENON100, CTA and LOFAR, as well as theory.
We are pleased to announce the creation of the first GRAPPA Postdoctoral Fellowship, and we are currently looking for excellent researchers who would like to work on projects relevant to the GRAPPA interdisciplinary program, either independently or in collaboration with existing members. Candidates should have a background in a field related to astroparticle physics, and they should have obtained their PhD after January 2008 or expect to obtain it by September 2012. The Fellowship appointment will be for 3 years, with a salary set by Dutch labor law, including generous benefit and funds for travel, computers, etc.
Candidates should send a cover letter, a research statement, and a curriculum vitae including publications to itf@science.uva.nl, with the subject "GRAPPA Fellowship". The research statement (maximum 4 pages) should include a summary of past research and an explanation of how the proposed research fits into the GRAPPA initiative. Candidates should also ensure that three letters of recommendation are sent to the same address by the deadline, December 15, 2011.
ERC postdoctoral positions
The GRAPPA Institute invites applications for one or two postdoctoral positions in the framework of the ERC Starting Grant 'WIMPs Kairos: The moment of truth for WIMP Dark Matter', coordinated by G. Postdoctoral Position in Computational and Theoretical Black Hole
Astrophysics
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the area
of computational and theoretical black hole astrophysics including
numerical relativity at the Georgia Tech Center for Relativistic
Astrophysics (CRA). The successful candidate will work with
Dr. Tamara Bogdanovic, who will join the CRA faculty in 2012, and
have opportunity to collaborate with other members of the CRA.
We are particularly interested in a candidate that will work on
interaction of single and binary black holes with their environment,
electromagnetic counterparts and black hole growth. Experience in
running and analyzing parallel (magneto)hydrodynamical simulations
is desired. The successful candidate will receive research and
travel support as well as access to the local high-performance
computing facilities and a new dedicated computer cluster. The
appointment will initially be for two years with a possible
extension to a third year, depending on funding availability and
satisfactory progress. The expected starting date of the position
is September 2012.
Current research interests at the CRA include theoretical topics
in black hole and accretion physics, galaxy formation and cosmology,
numerical relativity, gravitational waves and particle astrophysics.
Center faculty working on these areas include David Ballantyne,
Tamara Bogdanovic, Pablo Laguna (director), Nepomuk Otte, Deirdre
Shoemaker, Ignacio Taboada, and John Wise. For more information

Applications are invited for seasonal and sabbatical research fellowships at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory (MDIBL) for 2012. MDIBL is an independent basic and biomedical research and education institution with expertise in the areas of regenerative and developmental biology, cellular stress biology, membrane physiology, comparative and evolutionary biology, bioinformatics, neuroscience, and marine ecology and conservation. Resident and visiting faculty at MDIBL utilize a variety of model systems in their work
including experimentally tractable organisms such as C. elegans, zebrafish, axolotl, sea urchin, Xenopus, Fundulus and Daphnia. Extensive facilities are available for acquisition, maintenance and study of diverse marine vertebrates and invertebrates.
Fellowships cover lab rental, housing, user fees and supplies. The length of fellowship appointments is flexible. Candidates must possess a Ph.D. or M.D. degree and demonstrate a record of research productivity consistent with their current rank. Applications are encouraged from scientists working in both academia and industry.

Post-doctoral position in gravitational waves at the NASA Goddard Space
Flight Center and University of Maryland.
The Gravitational Astrophysics Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space
Flight Center and the Maryland Gravitational Wave Theory Group
at the University of Maryland-College Park (UMCP) are seeking
applications for a joint postdoctoral position in gravitational waves,
possibly opening in the Fall of 2012. The position is for one year with
the possibility of renewal for additional years.
This position supports a joint project, led by John Baker (GSFC),
and Alessandra Buonanno (UMCP), to study the performance of
future space-based gravitational-wave instruments in observing binary
black-hole mergers. Competitive applicants should have background
in source modeling, instrument modeling and/or data analysis.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, list of publications,
and a description of past research and future research plans,
and should arrange for at least three letters of recommendation

Development of a phase-stable femtosecond high-power and high-
repetition rate thin-disk-based laser oscillator
Position description:
High-peak-power and high repetition rate femtosecond laser systems have broad
range of feasible scientific and technological applications: attosecond pulse
generation, pump-probe and high-resolution XUV spectroscopy, material
processing. This work aims to make these applications reality.
PhD student will have a chance to face new tricky physics problems of inventive
and fundamental character and to find a way to solve them theoretically as well
as experimentally.
Your tasks:
development of a broadband femtosecond solid-state thin-disk Yb-based
oscillator [1]
complete characterization of this laser system
carrier-envelope phase (CEP) measurement and stabilization [2]
numerical optimization of the cavity configuration and simulations of the
stability regime of soliton mode-locking

basic knowledge in optics

Программа летних студентов в ЦЕРНе.
Если у кого-то есть желание летом на два месяца (июль, август) поехать в ЦЕРН по программе летних студентов, послушать лекции по физике высоких энергий, по физике элементарных частиц и по ускорительной технике, пообрабатывать данные с БАК, познакомиться поближе с самой передовой в мире экспериментальной установкой и весело провести время в компании таких же студентов из других стран и в компании нашей лаборатории, то пишите в приват. Поскольку жесткий дедлайн подачи заявлений 31 января, то жесткий дедлайн обращения ко мне 29 января. Но чем раньше вы обратитесь, тем лучше. Соотвественно предпочтения будут отдаваться студентам средних и старших курсов, специализирующихся на данной тематике и имеющих высокую успеваемость. Но и просто толковые ребята нам подойдут.

В 2012 г. факультет математики НИУ ВШЭ проводит очередной набор в аспирантуру. На бесплатные места могут претендовать граждане России и Республики Беларусь; граждане других стран - только на платные (за исключением поступающих по направлению Министерства образования и науки РФ). Приказом ректора НИУ ВШЭ все иностранные граждане, поступившие в аспирантуру, получают 100%-ую скидку со стоимости обучения. НИУ ВШЭ - государственный университет. Аспирантам предоставляется отсрочка от армии. Иногородние аспиранты обеспечиваются общежитием. По желанию аспирантов возможна совместная аспирантура с зарубежными университетами.
В 2012 г. планируется также открытие программы академической аспирантуры по математике . Аспирантам академической аспирантуры выплачивается стипендия 25 000 рублей в месяц. При этом аспиранты также могут работать внутри университета научными и учебными ассистентами . Обучение в академической аспирантуре включает в себя стажировку в ведущих зарубежных университетах. Срок подачи заявления - 15 сентября включительно.
