----------------------------------------------

The Department of Astronomy, University of Michigan (USA), invites applications for graduate studies in Astronomy and Astrophysics, beginning in September 2012. Graduate students take a small number of core astrophysics courses and carry out original research in observational or theoretical astrophysics.

The University of Michigan is one of the leading research universities in USA, and is consistently a top public university. A smart financial management and long‐term perspective have helped us to expand academic faculty and research spending (including graduate student fellowships) despite the global economic downturn. The department provides financial support through a combination of fellowships and research and teaching assistantships through the duration of the graduate program (up to 5 years).

Based on the scientific impact, our department ranks as 6th among all US astronomy departments. We have built a leadership position in the areas of extragalactic astronomy, galaxy formation, high‐energy astrophysics, star and planet formation, and astrobiology. We have 16 professors (19 including three cross-appointments in the Physics department) and 25 graduate students. Every student is known by every faculty and gets personalized mentoring. The faculty are young and active: 11 have been hired in the last 7 years. No other department in the US could match that.

Our graduate students conduct exciting research and land some of the most prestigious jobs in the field. Recent graduates have won Chandra/Einstein fellowships, Hubble Fellowships, and NSF Postdoctoral Fellowships, as well as research positions at Cambridge, Princeton, Caltech, UCSB, UCSC, and MIT. Almost half of our graduate students are women (11 of 25), a sign of our commitment to an equitable and supportive learning environment.

All of our graduate students begin research from day one in the department. Students are able and encouraged to lead observing programs at the two 6.5-m Magellan telescopes in Chile (in which Michigan has a 10% share) and the 2.4-m and 1.3-m MDM telescopes at Kitt Peak. Students actively use high-performance computing clusters and national supercomputer facilities. By the time they graduate, our students have on the average more than 8 refereed publications, 4 conference trips, and 2 Magellan visits. More information on our department is available at http://www.astro.lsa.umich.edu/.

The University of Michigan is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Despite being a small college town, it has more cultural and recreational offerings per resident than any other town or city. It is ranked number 2 Best College Town by the American Institute for Economic Research: http://www.annarbor.com/news/ann-arbor-ran...tinations-list/

To apply, you should take the GRE General and Physics subject tests, and the TOEFL test of proficiency in English. One copy of official undergraduate transcripts is required. Three letters of recommendation should be uploaded directly to the Graduate School website. Deadline for applications is January 6, 2012. Details on the application procedure are at http://www.astro.lsa.umich.edu/grad/index.php

If you have further questions specific to the Department and our Graduate Program, please contact me by email that can be found on the department website.

rofl.gif Извините, не удержался. Впрочем, сейчас по закону жанра должен прийти и сказать, что, мол, это на самом деле очень важный показатель, особенно по второму пункту.
