APOD: 2025 October 26 Б Halloween and the Ghost Head Nebula APOD APOD: 2025 October 26 Б Halloween and the Ghost Head Nebula

Halloween's origin is ancient and astronomical. Since the fifth century BC, Halloween has been celebrated as a cross-quarter day, a day halfway between an equinox (equal day / equal night) and a solstice (minimum day / maximum night in the northern hemisphere).

APOD: 2026 July 20 Б NGC 3576: The Statue of Liberty Nebula APOD APOD: 2026 July 20 Б NGC 3576: The Statue of Liberty Nebula

What's happening in the Statue of Liberty nebula? Bright stars and interesting molecules are forming and being liberated. The complex nebula resides in the star forming region called RCW 57, and besides the iconic monument, to some looks like a flying superhero or a weeping angel.

APOD: 2026 August 11 Б Six Moons of Saturn APOD APOD: 2026 August 11 Б Six Moons of Saturn

How many moons does Saturn have? While the total will likely continue to grow, as of June 2026 the ringed gas giant had 293 confirmed moons. That's easily more than any other planet of the Solar System, including ruling gas giant Jupiter with a mere 115 confirmed moons.

APOD: 2026 July 31 Б NGC 4372 and the Dark Doodad APOD APOD: 2026 July 31 Б NGC 4372 and the Dark Doodad

The Dark Doodad Nebula drifts through southern skies, a tantalizing target for binoculars toward the small constellation Musca, The Fly. A dusty interstellar cloud, it's seen against rich starfields just south of the Coalsack Nebula and the Southern Cross.

APOD: 2025 October 3 Б Pandora's Cluster of Galaxies APOD APOD: 2025 October 3 Б Pandora's Cluster of Galaxies

This deep field mosaicked image presents a stunning view of galaxy cluster Abell 2744 recorded by the James Webb Space Telescope's NIRCam. Also dubbed Pandora's Cluster, Abell 2744 itself appears to be a ponderous merger of three different massive galaxy clusters. It lies some 3.5 billion light-years away, toward the constellation Sculptor.

APOD: 2025 October 11 Б Manicouagan Impact Crater from Space APOD APOD: 2025 October 11 Б Manicouagan Impact Crater from Space

Orbiting 400 kilometers above Quebec, Canada, planet Earth, the International Space Station Expedition 59 crew captured this snapshot of the broad St. Lawrence River and curiously circular Lake Manicouagan on April 11, 2019. Right of center, the ring-shaped lake is a modern reservoir within the eroded remnant of an ancient 100 kilometer diameter impact crater.

APOD APOD: 2026 July 29 Б Psyche Receives Gravity Assist from Mars

Solar System bodies make deep space exploration more fuel efficient! TodayБs video shows the Psyche spacecraft gaining speed and changing its trajectory with minimal fuel spent due to a gravity assist from Mars in May 2026. Mars has an average orbital speed of almost 87,000 km/h (54,000 mph) around the Sun.

APOD: 2026 August 6 Б New Sharpest Image of the Sun Uncovers Instability APOD APOD: 2026 August 6 Б New Sharpest Image of the Sun Uncovers Instability

What does the new sharpest image of our Sun show? Instability. To be clear, a certain kind of interactive process called the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI). This instability can create waves and swirls when two streams flow past each other -- in this case variable streams of solar magnetic plasma.

APOD: 2025 October 7 Б SN Encore: A Second Supernova Seen Several Times APOD APOD: 2025 October 7 Б SN Encore: A Second Supernova Seen Several Times

Now a second supernova in this same galaxy is repeating. The cause is the gravitational lens effect of a massive foreground cluster of galaxies (MACS J0138) -- it creates multiple images of a perfectly aligned background galaxy (MRG-M0138). What's particularly interesting is that this background galaxy has young stars that keep blowing up.

APOD: 2026 August 5 Б Spokes on Saturn's B Ring APOD APOD: 2026 August 5 Б Spokes on Saturn's B Ring

DonБt get spooked by SaturnБs ghostly spokes! Today we feature a nearly two-hour timelapse of Saturn and its rings looping forwards and backwards. A day on Saturn is only 10 hours long, so two hours of observation covers quite a bit of its rotation.
