APOD: 2026 August 20 Б The Elephant s Trunk in Cepheus APOD: 2026 August 20 Б The Elephant s Trunk in Cepheus
20.08.2026

Like an illustration in a galactic Just So Story, the Elephant's Trunk Nebula winds through the emission region and young star cluster complex IC 1396, in the high and far off constellation of Cepheus. Also known as vdB 142, this cosmic elephant's trunk is over 20 light-years long.

Темные туманности в Хамелеоне APOD: 2025 November 19 Б Chamaeleon Dark Nebulas
19.11.2025

Sometimes the dark dust of interstellar space has an angular elegance. Such is the case toward the far-south constellation of Chamaeleon. Normally too faint to see, dark dust is best known for blocking visible light from stars and galaxies behind it.

A Treasure Chest in the Carina Nebula A Treasure Chest in the Carina Nebula
17.09.2026

This treasure chest is full of stars. The featured image was obtained with NASA's James Webb Space Telescope and shows a dust pilar in the Carina Nebula inside our Galaxy, roughly 7500 light-years away.

APOD: 2026 July 20 Б NGC 3576: The Statue of Liberty Nebula APOD: 2026 July 20 Б NGC 3576: The Statue of Liberty Nebula
20.07.2026

What's happening in the Statue of Liberty nebula? Bright stars and interesting molecules are forming and being liberated. The complex nebula resides in the star forming region called RCW 57, and besides the iconic monument, to some looks like a flying superhero or a weeping angel.

Покраснение в M71 The Reddening of M71
9.12.2014

Now known to be a globular star cluster at the tender age of 10 billion years, M71 is a mere 13,000 light-years away within the narrow boundaries of the faint constellation Sagitta. Close...

Центр Галактики с аннотацией The Annotated Galactic Center
27.09.2019

The center of our Milky Way galaxy can be found some 26,000 light-years away toward the constellation Sagittarius. Even on a dark night, you can't really see it though. Gaze in that direction, and your sight-line is quickly obscured by intervening interstellar dust.

Туманность Акула The Shark Nebula
7.09.2015

There is no sea on Earth large enough to contain the Shark nebula. This predator apparition poses us no danger, though, as it is composed only of interstellar gas and dust. Dark dust like that featured here is somewhat like cigarette smoke and created in the cool atmospheres of giant stars.
