Supernova 1994D and the Unexpected Universe
12.03.2000
Far away, long ago, a star exploded. Supernova 1994D, visible as the bright spot on the lower left, occurred in the outskirts of disk galaxy NGC 4526. Supernova 1994D was not of interest for how different it was, but rather for how similar it was to other supernovae. In fact, the
Close Comet and Large Magellanic Cloud
17.03.2016
Sporting a surprisingly bright, lovely green coma Comet 252P/Linear poses next to the Large Magellanic Cloud in this southern skyscape. The stack of telephoto exposures was captured on March 16 from Penwortham, South Australia.
Asteroid 2014 JO25
20.04.2017
A day before its closest approach, asteroid 2014 JO25 was imaged by radar with the 70-meter antenna of NASA's Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California. This grid of 30 radar images, top left to lower right, reveals the two-lobed shape of the asteroid that rotates about once every five hours.
Comet Lovejoy through Morby Castle Ruins
4.12.2013
This new comet is quite photogenic. Comet Lovejoy, discovered only three months ago, was imaged through ruins of ancient MЖrby Castle in Sweden last week sporting a green-glowing coma and tails trailing several degrees.
X ray Echoes from Circinus X 1
5.08.2015
Circinus X-1 is an X-ray binary star known for its erratic variability. In the bizarre Circinus X-1 system, a dense neutron star, the collapsed remnant of a supernova explosion, orbits with a more ordinary stellar companion.
The Full Moon of 2021
1.01.2022
Every Full Moon of 2021 shines in this year-spanning astrophoto project, a composite portrait of the familiar lunar nearside at each brightest lunar phase. Arranged by moonth, the year progresses in stripes beginning at the top.
APOD: 2023 January 25 Б LDN 1622: The Boogeyman Nebula
25.01.2023
To some, the dark shape looks like a mythical boogeyman. Scientifically, Lynds' Dark Nebula (LDN) 1622 appears against a faint background of glowing hydrogen gas only visible in long telescopic exposures of the region.
APOD: 2025 December 24 Б Mystery: Little Red Dots in the Early Universe
24.12.2025
What are these little red dots (LRDs)? Nobody knows. Discovered only last year, hundreds of LRDs have now been found by the James Webb Space Telescope in the early universe. Although extremely faint, LRDs are now frequently identified in deep observations made for other purposes.
APOD: 2024 September 24 Б NGC 6727: The Rampaging Baboon Nebula
24.09.2024
This dusty region is forming stars. Part of a sprawling molecular cloud complex that resembles, to some, a rampaging baboon, the region is a relatively close by 500 light-years away toward the constellation Corona Australis. That's about one third the distance of the more famous stellar nursery known as the Orion Nebula.
Moon Games
1.08.2008
The Moon's measured diameter is around 3,476 kilometers (2,160 miles). But apparent angular size, or the angle covered by an object, can also be important to Moon enthusiasts. Angular size depends on distance, the farther away an object is, the smaller an angle it covers.
